Cinquefoils 04:43
There is a place before the river Where the delta spreads five fingers The peacocks replicate these Patterns of the flowers in their quill tips There is a place beyond the river Where the anxious ones find solace Where the tired souls find slumber Stretched upon a bed of wildflowers Drunk on the pollen That’s where I lie with my lady Just as Nature directs us Drunk on Its pollen Watching a procession from an anthill They carry all the secret herbs and spices From all the hidden plants and berries

Come Home 03:50
I’m trying to remember where I went wrong I only want to talk you into coming back I wont even ask you where ya been Or who you been staying with Because since you’ve been away This house is a barren place The phone it just doesn’t ring Come Home (Baby) I have imagined a thousand days You come back through my door Draw the bath so very warm I will cut the wood and put the supper on Then poor the blood red wine To warm and to welcome you Back to my bed Come Home (Baby) All the days, I couldn’t count all the days that have passed without even unsettling the dust in this room. Every time a train passes by, it shakes this tiny house to remind me that I am alone shaking without your love

Captain 04:29
The captain and his son sailed away They pushed off the dock on the fifth day of May Determined to set a new course Led by the stars and a compass under moonlight Then they sing: “This is the way we were raised Tug on the cables to straighten the sails We’re determined to find our own way Even if it takes us to the last day of May” The captain spoke: “Have you ever wanted to die? These things I’ve known my son once or twice There are methods of navigation through life Please let me give you the best of advice It takes steadfast endurance through the storm Keep a candle and a compass always aboard Look up to the stars every night Always remember you’re somebody’s child, yes you’re mine” The captain then lit up his pipe Put a hand over brow and gazed towards the skyline Where a pilot then struggled in flight Too close to a mountain directly in sight Then the captain spoke: “You see that plane starboard thirty degrees That’s a man lost as you’ll ever see That’s a man lost as I think I’ve ever seen Promise my son you will stay on the sea”

i wanna know. . . .the tone that makes yer legs go all rubbery and makes yer skin stand up prickly pear I wanna know the tone. . . .and become that emission There are simple things I’ve forgotten In my slumbers I have ignored them The sound of two feet on the sidewalk Kicking bottlecaps across the pavement Without song, what is worship? In some vague way I try to communicate why- Smoke proceeds the fire But still lingers around the ashes For all of these self-glorifying preoccupations Have I known true comfort? There are simple truths I’ve mistaken In wasted words over simple matters There are children playing four-square Orbiting a yellow ball They are laughing like there is no one There is nothing beyond the four squares Where I convince myself I am an atom of dust kicked up by a jump rope For all of these self-nullifying slight misconceptions Have I known atonement?

“Silent Night, the prairie evening brightened by the stars, they shine relentlessly in every direction. Francis, come here, fetch your brother another beer, one before he stumbles off to war. Alex, my boy, I watched you growin up stabbing at invisible enemies don’t get yourself killed fighting someone else’s bloody cause. Frances, come on, play your brothers favorite song. . . .the one about the horse that broke the fence and threw the jockey to a bloody 4 ft mess” Francis: The racehorse once broke through the fence And ran towards a blood orange sunset They used to call him Gluestick Now it’s Thunderclap! “Alex, my son, please don’t ever forget this place you come from, don’t get yourself killed fighting someone else’s horseshit cause. Your grandfather Babe was a farmer by trade but a solid fighter in his day. Just like Ali, just like the people’s party prophesises an analogy: An elephant sleeping will awaken one day” Jonathan: The elephant rises to his knees Breathes out such thunder 360 degrees Then tramples down his oppressors with ease Then tramples down all that he sees

I know moonlight I know starlight I lay this body down I walk in the moonlight I walk in the starlight I lay this body down I know the graveyard I walk through the graveyard I lay this body down A path under moonlight A path under starlight The flesh dissolves in the ground

Confession 03:27
In some strangers house to the only open ear You made your next confession On these hot summer nights you have suffered delusions Between the movie house and the drug store You claim necessary fictions In this train station town, were you meant to unravel? You welcome home with open arms each returning soldier, And try to convince them that nothing has changed I know about your obsessions, I have held and fed them all I know all about each one of your obsessions, last of the late night/early morning confessions In all these years you still haven’t learned that a busy ant has no worries No one can carry twice their own weight in despair You love the sight of an audience attentive to your lil’ sparrow With a delicate chirp it reveals an imprisoned insight You need to feel the weight of release by spilling your guts to strangers But you will always question the sincerity of their applause I know all about your obsessions, I have held and fed them all I know all about each one of your obsessions, last of the late night/ early morning confessions
8.
Pilot 03:31
The pilot is tapping the gauges Flying low flying low Without any destination Flying low over the mountain Flying low Without hope of destination Without fear
9.
Look here little man You’ve seen every square of this town This whole town has seen you Schlepping around like some kind of junky desperado Searching for inspiration waiting on inspiration You might wait all night For your little dog to come home Bruised and battered Timid of your shaking hands One job to the next One girl to the next One home to the next Paycheck to hand to mouth to paycheck The pains are temporary The pleasures are temporary One dive to the next You argue art and sustenance Language is temporary Flesh is temporary Substance is temporary (ergo) There is no rhythm or cadence Unbeknownst to this centrifugal Transfer of heat and momentum We are just honeybees and pistons (At the height of some age of decadence) If there is some perpetual season Sustaining such flagrant expression Bright dresses shaking round with hips and asses A bonfire in our chest claims A blur of vague formation A lub dub blood pulsation Like glorified organisms In their own enchantments Know only the rights of this metered season With the closest blunted object administer a tempo A blur of vague formation A lub dub blood pulsation

about

Old Blood was recorded in May and November of 2001 at Presto Studios in Lincoln, NE. Mayday features the vocals and compositions of Lullaby for the Working Class frontman Ted Stevens. Ted is joined by the remaining Lullaby members, including Mike and A.J. Mogis, whose talents extend from behind the mixing console as players on the recording.

The instrumentation of Old Blood is referential to the Lullaby staples of guitar, vibraphone, strings, and banjo, extending the formula with piano, organ, tympani, and loads of guest vocals. The resulting sound is both raw and ornate. Revisited themes of spring, rebirth, solidarity, florescence, and distress establish a unity of imagery amidst sporadic changes in song dynamic. The songs were selected from a long and arbitrary collection of demos that have been in the works for years. The name "Mayday" is significant in that Ted and friends have held a small concert billed as Mayday each May 1 for the last six years.

Ted has spent the last couple of years playing in Cursive, as well as backing up Bright Eyes, Dave Dondero, Azure Ray, Simon Joyner, and The Good Life. As Lullaby, Ted, Tiffany, Mike and A.J. released three albums on Bar None Records and a host of vinyl releases for Saddle Creek.
